CPV Retail Green-e® Certified RECs

CPV Retail proudly offers a REC-only product called “CPV Retail Renewables” as a participant in the Center for Resource Solutions Green-e® Energy program. 

CPV Retail Renewables is Green-e® Energy certified and meets the environmental and consumer-protection standards set forth by the nonprofit Center for Resource Solutions. Green-e® Energy is a trademark of the Center for Resource Solutions. Learn more at www.green-e.org.

CPV Retail Renewables is a Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) product and does not contain electricity. A REC represents the environmental benefits of 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable energy that can be paired with electricity.

Green-e is an internationally recognized third-party verification program for renewable energy that has operated successfully since 1997. It certifies the majority of voluntary renewable energy purchased in North America. Green-e is recognized by the EPA, LEED, CDP, B Corp, SPLC, and many other leading organizations. 

Center for Resource Solutions (CRS) is the nonprofit that administers the Green-e program. CRS has been a leading voice in renewable energy for 20 years and works to support renewable energy and carbon offset purchasing through policy and market solutions. 

Green-e Energy is a program within Green-e that certifies renewable energy products. Green-e Energy certification covers the entire chain of custody of renewable energy attributes, from generation to retirement, to ensure that customers get exactly what they paid for. 

A REC, or renewable energy certificate, represents the environmental attributes of one megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable electricity. For each MWh of renewable energy generated, one REC is also generated. Only the owner of the REC can claim the benefits of that MWh of renewable energy, and therefore the accurate tracking of RECs is essential to the functioning of energy markets. Energy users that pair one MWh of system-mix electricity with one REC can claim to be using one MWh of renewable energy. 

Green-e Energy certifies renewable energy certificate products, competitive electricity products, utility green pricing programs, community choice aggregation programs, community solar, and direct renewable energy procurement. 

No, Green-e Energy is a product-level certification, meaning that it only certifies renewable energy products sold by utilities, competitive electricity suppliers, and energy marketers. Renewable energy projects may seek inclusion of RECs from their projects in Green-e Energy certified products, but the project itself cannot be considered “certified.”  

The Green-e Renewable Energy Standard for Canada and the United States has detailed requirements for eligible renewable energy supply. In short, renewable energy must come from a facility built in the last 15 years, it must come from an eligible resource (wind, solar, geothermal, low-impact hydro, and some forms of biomass), it must have been generated no earlier than Q3 of the prior year, and it must be tracked in an electronic tracking system. The Standard lists several additional requirements and exceptions.
